Nigeria has qualified for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers after reaching the semifinals of the ongoing AfroBasket championship in Abidjan.

Nigeria’s D’Tigress extended their AfroBasket dominance with an emphatic 83–47 win over Cameroon in Thursday’s quarterfinal clash. The victory not only sends them into the last four of the tournament but also guarantees their place in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments.

Alongside Nigeria, semifinalists Mali, Senegal, and South Sudan have also clinched qualification for the global qualifiers scheduled for March 2026. The qualifying events will feature 24 teams across four tournaments, from which 16 will advance to the World Cup finals in Germany.

The full quarterfinal results are as follows:

·        🇺🇬 Uganda 68 – 69 🇸🇸 South Sudan

·        🇲🇱 Mali 86 – 68 🇲🇿 Mozambique

·        🇨🇮 Côte d’Ivoire 60 – 66 🇸🇳 Senegal

·        🇳🇬 Nigeria 83 – 47 🇨🇲 Cameroon

Interestingly, group leaders Uganda and Côte d’Ivoire fell short in the quarterfinals, while South Sudan, who finished last in Group B, caused an upset to advance.

The semifinal pairings set for Friday, 1 August 2025, are:

·        🇳🇬 Nigeria vs Senegal

·        🇲🇱 Mali vs South Sudan

Africa’s four semifinalists now join a diverse cast of global teams heading into the World Cup qualifying rounds. From the Americas, Brazil, Argentina, USA, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Colombia have booked their places. Asia and Oceania will be represented by Japan, China, Korea, the Philippines, New Zealand, and Australia. Europe sends hosts Germany, plus the Czech Republic, Hungary, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, and Turkey.

The next challenge for D’Tigress will be a familiar rival, Senegal—a rematch of previous finals with regional pride and a spot in the AfroBasket final at stake.
