AFN begins consultations on modernising joint defence doctrine and bridging operational gaps

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Sector 1 Joint Task Force North-West Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Mayirenso Saraso has emphasized the importance of tactical-level execution as the foundation for strategic military success.

He made this known while receiving the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Committee on the Review of the Armed Forces of Nigeria Joint Defence Doctrine at the Division Headquarters in Kaduna. According to the GOC, a bottom-up approach is crucial in modern warfare, and initial feedback from the Division was based on a draft document, which may have limited the full scope of their recommendations.

Team Leader, Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Amin Isah said the committee was directed by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, to engage with Field Commanders across the country in revising the outdated 2017 Joint Defence Document. He noted that the aim is to identify operational gaps in areas such as training, equipment, discipline, leadership, recruitment, and intelligence, while incorporating modern technologies into joint operations.

In a related engagement, the Division also hosted members of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Kaduna State Chapter, as part of civil-military collaboration efforts.

Chairman of the NIPR Kaduna Chapter, Haroun Malami explained that the Institute is part of the Global Alliance for Communication, headquartered in Switzerland, with over 360 member organisations across 126 countries. He noted that the visit is intended to deepen mutual cooperation and create new opportunities for strategic public relations partnerships with the Nigerian Army.

Representing the GOC, Chief of Staff of the Division, Brigadier General David Nwakonobi commended the NIPR’s outreach and welcomed their upcoming hosting of the 3rd Nigerian Public Relations Week (NPRW) and 63rd Annual General Meeting and Conference, scheduled for Monday 20 to Friday 24 April 2026 in Kaduna.
