The announcement comes as mediators Egypt and Qatar, backed by the United States, work to implement a temporary truce and release hostages amid an escalating humanitarian crisis.
A source from Hamas confirmed to AFP on Monday that the group and its factions
had agreed to the new proposal without changes. “Hamas has delivered its
response to the mediators, confirming that Hamas and the factions agreed to the
new ceasefire proposal without requesting any amendments,” the source said on
condition of anonymity.
Israel has
yet to formally respond. A Palestinian source familiar with the talks said
mediators were expected to announce the agreement and set a date for the
resumption of talks, alongside guarantees to ensure implementation and pursue a
permanent solution.
The
ceasefire plan reportedly envisions an initial 60-day truce and phased hostage
release. Of 251 hostages taken during Hamas’ October 2023 attack that triggered
the war, 49 remain in Gaza, including 27 reported dead by the Israeli military.
Islamic Jihad officials indicated that 10 hostages would be released alive
during the first phase, along with several bodies, with remaining captives to
follow in a second phase.
The proposal
comes more than a week after Israel’s security cabinet approved plans to expand
operations into Gaza City and nearby refugee camps, sparking domestic and
international criticism.
US President
Donald Trump weighed in on Truth Social, stating: “We will only see the return
of the remaining hostages when Hamas is confronted and destroyed! The sooner
this takes place, the better the chances of success.”
Fact-Check & Background
The Gaza conflict began after Hamas’ October 2023 attack on southern Israel, which killed about 1,200 people and took 251 hostages.
Israel’s military retaliation has killed tens of thousands according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Mediators Egypt and Qatar, with U.S. support, have repeatedly attempted to negotiate truces, with plans including phased hostage releases.
The international community has expressed concern over Israel’s recent plans to expand military operations into densely populated areas, while humanitarian groups warn of famine, collapsing infrastructure, and civilian casualties.
