The bridge, operational since November 2018, not only improved the road network but has also become a symbol of enduring China-Mozambique friendship and the government’s vision for accelerated national development.

President Chapo told China Media Group that infrastructure projects like the Maputo Bridge are key to unlocking Mozambique’s economic potential, particularly in sectors like natural gas, industrial zones, and real estate. “Indeed, this bridge is a hallmark. But in fact, we want to continue building more projects,” he said.

Chapo cited a Chinese saying: “If you want to get rich, build roads first,” emphasizing that strategic infrastructure is central to the country’s growth ambitions.

Local residents have embraced the bridge as a concrete marvel, dubbing it the “Bridge of Dream” for its role in shortening commutes and connecting previously isolated communities.

Fact-Check & Background

The Maputo Bridge links the two halves of Maputo, Mozambique’s capital, spanning the Maputo Bay to the Katembe suburb.

Constructed by a Chinese company, the bridge began operation in November 2018.

Travel times across the city prior to the bridge could take hours; now journeys take just minutes.

Infrastructure development is a core focus of Mozambique’s government, aimed at leveraging the country’s mineral and energy resources for faster economic growth.
