The protest comes amid mounting outrage over civilian deaths in Gaza, where health officials say more than 62,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023.
Motorbike riders and drivers circled the Kenyan capital in convoy, draped in
Palestinian flags and blasting horns, while crowds denounced Israel’s
bombardment of hospitals and homes.
Activist Shakira Wafula told demonstrators: “The genocide in Palestine has to stop. Children are dying, women
are suffering. They are bombing hospitals and residential areas. And Israel
basically wants to extinguish the existence of Palestinians.”
Some protesters drew parallels
between Gaza’s plight and Africa’s own history of oppression. Nabil Mohamed declared: “What we can see happening in Gaza right now and
what happened in Africa is basically the same because they are going through
occupation. We went through colonization. We share the same colonial masters
and we can't just sit back and watch what is happening there—the mass murders,
the genocide, the starvation and killing of innocent children and women.”
The march unfolded peacefully under
heavy police presence, with organisers stressing that Kenya could not remain
silent as humanitarian agencies warn of starvation in Gaza.
Background
Context
The war began with Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which killed around
1,200 people and saw hundreds abducted.
Israel launched a sweeping military campaign in Gaza in response. The Hamas-run Health Ministry says more than 62,000 Palestinians have since been killed, while aid agencies cite catastrophic hunger under Israeli restrictions.
Israel disputes those figures,
dismissing them as Hamas propaganda, and insists its campaign is aimed at
dismantling militant infrastructure.
