Spain faces its most dangerous wildfire wave of 2025, with record heat and mass evacuations gripping Galicia.
Spain has deployed more than 1,900 troops to battle
raging wildfires in Galicia, as temperatures soar and evacuations spread across
the northwest.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez confirmed the deployment
on Sunday, noting that additional aircraft reinforcements were expected from
other European nations to bolster the effort.
Firefighters remain concentrated on 12 major wildfires
threatening the city of Ourense, where Galicia’s regional leader, Alfonso
Rueda, said evacuations and lockdowns had been ordered to shield homes from
advancing flames.
The Spanish weather agency, AEMET,
has forecast temperatures of up to 45°C, warning that the fire risk remains
“extreme.”
So far this year, more than 158,000 hectares have already been destroyed by wildfires across Spain—one of the worst tolls in recent memory.
Fact-Check & Background:
Spain has experienced a surge in wildfires since 2022, exacerbated by drought and record summer temperatures.
The Ourense region is historically vulnerable, but the scale of the 2025 fires has prompted EU-level intervention.
