Trump reiterates US recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.

Former United States President Donald Trump has reaffirmed American recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara, a move that continues to influence international alignment on the decades-old conflict.

In a statement quoted by Morocco’s official news agency MAP, Trump said:

“I also reiterate that the United States recognises Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports Morocco's serious, credible and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute.”

Trump initially recognized Morocco’s claim to the territory in late 2020, during the final months of his first term in office, marking a major shift in US foreign policy. His reaffirmation over the weekend underscores his continuing influence on the matter, especially as international consensus gradually tilts in Rabat’s favour.

The Western Sahara dispute stems from the 1970s decolonization of Spanish Sahara, with Morocco asserting sovereignty, while the Polisario Front — backed by Algeria — demands an independent Sahrawi republic.

In 2007, Morocco proposed an autonomy plan for the territory under Moroccan rule, calling it a realistic solution. However, the Polisario Front continues to demand a UN-backed referendum on independence — a process that has remained stalled for years.

In recent years, Morocco has garnered growing international support. Nations such as the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and Portugal have expressed backing for Rabat’s autonomy proposal. Ghana also shifted its stance in June 2025, dropping its long-held support for Western Saharan independence in favour of the Moroccan plan.

Trump’s renewed statement may signal further entrenchment of US policy under Republican influence, especially ahead of the upcoming presidential cycle.
