Immediate humanitarian intervention is critical as famine and a fast-spreading cholera outbreak threaten vulnerable populations.

The United Nations has classified 17 areas in Sudan — including parts of Darfur, the Nuba Mountains, Khartoum, and Jazira — as at risk of famine. StΓ©phane Dujarric, U.N. spokesperson, said the World Food Program is calling for immediate humanitarian access to El Fasher, which is facing severe food shortages and remains cut off from aid.

Residents in some affected areas are reportedly surviving on animal fodder and discarded food, described by the UN as a "coping mechanism." Dujarric emphasized the need for an end to the conflict, stating, “We reiterate our concern about the ongoing conflict and renew our calls for all parties to end the violence and put the interest of their people first.”

Meanwhile, health officials in Khartoum have launched a 10-day cholera vaccination campaign to curb a rapidly spreading outbreak that threatens already vulnerable populations. Humanitarian agencies warn that without immediate intervention, the combined threats of famine and disease could worsen significantly.

Fact-Check & Background Context:
Sudan has faced years of political instability and armed conflict, particularly in Darfur and the Nuba Mountains.

These regions have experienced recurring food insecurity, limited humanitarian access, and outbreaks of preventable diseases.

The World Food Program and other agencies have repeatedly called for safe corridors to deliver aid.
