WAEC says over 33% drop in WASSCE 2025 performance as results go live online.
The West
African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Monday released the results of the 2025
May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), taken by
over 1.9 million candidates across 23,000 secondary schools in Nigeria.
Head of National
Office, WAEC Nigeria, Dr. Amos Dangut said the council had concluded all
processes and that results were now accessible to candidates.
“Today, I am
happy to announce to you that all the processes leading to the release of the
results have been concluded,” Dr. Dangut stated during a press briefing.
However, the
council revealed a 33.8 percent decline in overall candidate performance
compared to previous years, a statistic that has raised alarm among education
stakeholders regarding declining learning outcomes.
In a
follow-up statement published via WAEC’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle,
the council confirmed that students can check their results online at www.waecdirect.org,
using their result-checking PIN and examination number.
Meanwhile,
the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) has
urged the Federal Government to reassess existing educational policies, warning
that recent trends could have long-term implications on academic quality and
access to opportunities.
The 2025
examination, which was conducted amidst logistical hurdles and weather
disruptions in some regions, marks another milestone in WAEC's digital
transition efforts. Stakeholders are calling for targeted intervention to
reverse the troubling academic performance trend.
