Lagos State Government advises residents to stay alert after extended rainfall causes flash flooding across the city.

The Lagos State Government has called on residents to stay calm and exercise caution following a prolonged rainfall lasting over 12 hours, which led to flash flooding in several parts of the metropolis on Monday.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in an official statement, said the state's flood management systems are operational and designed to cope with heavy rainfall, but he warned that high water volumes may temporarily overwhelm drainage in low-lying and waterfront areas.

Wahab’s statement came after a weather alert from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) forecasting sustained downpours and thunderstorms across Lagos for the next 72 hours.

“Being a coastal city, Lagos often experiences rising lagoon water levels during intense rainfalls. This can cause tidal locks, hampering the effective discharge of stormwater,” Wahab explained.

He warned that residents in riverine and lagoon-bordering communities may face high-current flash floods. Parents were advised to keep children indoors and off flooded routes, while motorists and pedestrians were cautioned against attempting to cross submerged roads.

Highlighting key flood risks, Wahab condemned the indiscriminate disposal of refuse into drainage channels, noting that such actions block stormwater flow and worsen flooding. He said offenders would face legal sanctions under state environmental laws.

The commissioner also outlined the government’s ongoing efforts, including continuous desilting of drains and the awarding of contracts for concrete-lining of key channels across the city.

“However, in situations where there is more than usual rainfall, as experienced in the last 12 hours, collective responsibility is needed to mitigate the impact,” he added.

Emergency response teams remain on standby, and the government urged all residents to heed safety advisories and remain alert throughout the peak rainy season.
