Major wildfire outbreak in southern France amid climate challenge, emergency crews in southern France are battling a massive wildfire that has scorched over 4,000 hectares of land, destroyed homes, and left two people injured, including one in critical condition.

The fire erupted in the Corbières hills region of Aude, near the Mediterranean and the Spanish border. Fueled by dry conditions and powerful winds, the blaze spread rapidly, prompting evacuations from campgrounds and parts of a village. Several roads were also closed.

Lucie Roesch, secretary general of the Aude prefecture, told AFP, “The fire is spreading very quickly... It’s one of the driest areas in the department and the wind is strong.”

Nearly 1,000 firefighters, supported by 14 aircraft, have been deployed in the battle to contain the blaze. Authorities warn that the night would be particularly difficult as conditions remain unfavourable.

The region’s fire risk has intensified due to prolonged drought and the loss of natural firebreaks such as vineyards, which previously helped contain similar outbreaks.

As climate-linked disasters grow more frequent across the Mediterranean, experts say southern France’s fire season is becoming more intense and unpredictable.
