Governor Zulum makes a commitment during DEPOWA's ‘Thank You Troops’ campaign visit to Borno State.

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has declared his administration’s readiness to deepen support for wounded-in-action personnel and bereaved families of military and police officers who lost their lives in counter-insurgency operations.

He made the pledge on Monday at the Government House, Maiduguri, while receiving the President of the Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs. Lilian Ogogo Christopher Musa, who is in the state for the launch of the Thank You Troops Campaign.

The campaign, spearheaded by DEPOWA — an umbrella body for wives of officers from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police — aims to honour the sacrifices of frontline troops, extend care to the wounded, and provide sustained support to widows and orphans of fallen heroes.

“I promised to be a champion to this noble course by identifying with officers and men of the military. My doors are always open to you at any time to partner with you to support the wounded-in-action, widows, and orphans of deceased military personnel to give them a sense of belonging,” Governor Zulum pledged.

Recalling the resilience of troops in resettled communities like Baga, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s plans to facilitate further resettlements as a way of consolidating the military’s operational gains.

He also called for more opportunities for troops to reconnect with their families. “I am a strong advocate of the need to create an avenue for troops to visit their families, this is very important,” Zulum added.

The governor commended the Chief of Defence Staff, service chiefs, Theatre Commander, and troops for their gallantry and resilience in restoring stability to the Northeast.

DEPOWA President Mrs. Lilian Christopher Musa praised Governor Zulum’s long-standing support for the military and bereaved families, highlighting his scholarship programmes and welfare interventions.

“The ‘Thank You to Our Troops’ campaign is our heartfelt nationwide movement to honour these sacrifices, to tell our soldiers — and indeed the Nigerian people — that their courage is seen, their service is valued, and their sacrifices will never be forgotten. We are starting here, in Borno State, because this is the heart of the fight, and Your Excellency’s leadership stands as a symbol of resilience,” Mrs. Musa said.

She reaffirmed DEPOWA’s commitment to complement government efforts in improving the lives of widows, orphans, youths, and the less privileged both within and outside military barracks.
