The
Armed Forces of Nigeria closed August with sweeping gains across the nation,
neutralising terrorist leaders, rescuing hostages and dismantling criminal
networks from the North East to the South-South. The month also saw troops foil
oil theft schemes worth over ₦574 million, underscoring the military’s growing
grip on threats to national security.

According
to the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, the
sustained tempo of operations delivered telling blows against insurgents,
kidnappers and economic saboteurs. He said the results reflected the Armed
Forces’ determination to “restore peace, protect citizens and safeguard the
territorial integrity of Nigeria.”
Troops
pressed hard in the North East, where Boko Haram, ISWAP and JAS elements were
overrun in multiple locations, yielding the deaths of notorious commanders, the
arrest of collaborators and the recovery of weapons and logistics. In the North
West and North Central, terrorists and bandits came under coordinated assault,
with dozens eliminated and many kidnapped victims freed. Arrests of gunrunners
and ransom couriers highlighted the wider dismantling of support structures
fuelling insecurity.
The
South-South theatre turned up decisive pressure on oil thieves, with nearly
620,000 litres of stolen crude recovered and dozens of illegal refining sites
destroyed. Arrests of armed oil criminals and seizure of cash proceeds
reinforced the clampdown on the billion-naira black market bleeding the
economy. In the South East, separatist camps were destroyed and stockpiles of
weapons and explosives seized, cutting into the operational reach of violent
groups.
General
Kangye also addressed protests by retired soldiers at the Federal Ministry of
Finance, clarifying that gratuities are tied to the salary chart in force at
retirement. While affirming the right to peaceful protest, he urged veterans to
vacate the premises to allow normal government work to continue.
The
Defence Headquarters closed the August briefing with a vow to sustain the
momentum into September. “Our troops remain resolute, professional and
dedicated to safeguarding this nation,” Kangye said, calling on citizens to
rely on verified information and support ongoing operations.
The
August record underscored a military on the offensive across all fronts,
shifting from containment to disruption and steadily tightening Nigeria’s
national security shield.
