The latest wave of violence saw at least 19 people killed in airstrikes across Darfur, according to the local NGO Emergency Lawyers. A Sudanese army drone strike on a medical clinic in South Darfur killed 12 people at midday Saturday, while later bombings in el-Fasher claimed seven more lives - attacks believed to have been carried out by RSF fighters.

The RSF, commanded by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, has kept el-Fasher under siege for more than a year in a bid to seize the last major city in Darfur still controlled by the Sudanese army.

Observers warn that the paramilitary group has escalated its assault in recent weeks, deploying heavy weaponry and targeting civilian areas. The siege has cut off supply routes, pushing the city’s half a million residents closer to famine, with aid agencies unable to reach those in need.

International monitors fear that the prolonged battle for el-Fasher could trigger a massacre on the scale of earlier atrocities in Darfur, where ethnic militias aligned with the RSF were accused of systematic killings and displacement during the early 2000s.

Humanitarian groups are calling for urgent intervention to prevent the crisis from spiraling further, but diplomatic efforts remain deadlocked as both sides reject ceasefire appeals.

Fact-Check & Background Context:

The RSF was formed from Janjaweed militias accused of genocide in Darfur in the early 2000s.

El-Fasher is the administrative capital of North Darfur and the last major urban center in the region under army control.

Since April 2023, Sudan’s civil war between the RSF and Sudanese Armed Forces has killed over 16,000 people and displaced millions, according to UN estimates.

Aid agencies have repeatedly warned that Darfur is on the brink of famine, with blocked routes and targeted strikes worsening conditions.
