Minister of
Defence, Mohammed Badaru introduced the symbolic digital innovation, tagged
“Thank A Soldier” with a QR Code to be scanned by citizens to send appreciation
messages.
The launching
took place during a press briefing for the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and
Remembrance Day (AFCRD), a solemn reminder of Nigeria’s enduring gratitude to
its fallen heroes and serving troops, held at the National Defence College,
Abuja.
Troops Welfare
He further
emphasized that the welfare of personnel remains central to defence policy
through the “Soldier First”
initiative, which has led to improvements in Ration Cash Allowance,
modernization of barracks, payment of ₦18 billion in Group Life Insurance
benefits, and the introduction of Debarment Allowance for veterans.
The Minister
also announced a new digital and institutional reforms, including the creation
of a Veterans’ Databank and Call Centre for efficient service delivery, and
plans to review the Nigerian Legion Act to establish a Veterans Federation of
Nigeria.
Veterans Welfare
In
recognition of national reconciliation, the Ministry has enrolled 2,141 Civil
War veterans who retired before pension eligibility, ensuring all sacrifices
are acknowledged. Defence Health Maintenance Limited now provides healthcare to
over 400,000 enrollees, including more than 205,000 veterans and their
families.
Looking
ahead, Badaru revealed a new initiative titled “Reclaiming the Ungoverned Space for Economic Benefits Programme
(RUSEB-P),” designed to engage retired veterans in restoring security and
economic activity in formerly insurgent-occupied regions.
