The appointment comes after the resignation of Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar on Monday 1 December 2025, triggering a swift nomination and Senate confirmation within twenty four hours.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), Bayo Onanuga, the President administered the oath of office on Thursday with senior government officials, security chiefs and dignitaries present.

Born in Sokoto in 1967, General Musa was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1991. He rose through the ranks and served as Chief of Defence Staff from 2023 until his retirement in October 2025.

As Defence Chief, he championed stronger inter service cooperation and pushed for tighter joint operational frameworks across theatres.

With his swearing in, the retired General is expected to immediately assume duties as the Tinubu administration seeks to consolidate recent security gains and accelerate reforms meant to secure lasting peace and stability across Nigeria.

The ceremony was attended by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

Also in attendance were Mrs Lilian Oghogho Musa, spouse of the new Minister, Chief of Defence Staff General Olufemi Oluyede, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, and Justice Kumai Bayang Akaahs (rtd).
