Lieutenant General Yahaya on Wednesday instituted a defamation suit at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, seeking N1.5 billion in damages and formal public retractions over publications he says gravely injured his reputation and integrity.
The suit, filed following the expiration of a demand notice, names Major General Danjuma Hamisu Ali-Keffi (rtd), Arise Broadcasting Limited and Sahara Reporters Media Group Inc. as defendants.
Court filings indicate that the former Army Chief is also seeking additional damages of N600 million, alongside unequivocal public apologies from the defendants for the alleged defamatory broadcasts and reports.
In a statement by issued by Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman (rtd), the claimant contends that the publications were not only false but deliberately malicious, arguing that the allegations sought to associate him with criminal activities capable of undermining his personal standing and decades of military service.
According to the court processes, the matter has been duly filed before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and the defendants have been formally served to enter appearance in line with applicable court rules.
The legal action marks a significant escalation in the dispute, shifting the matter from public allegation to judicial determination, with the court now expected to examine the substance, intent and impact of the contested publications.
