The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, FNIPR, stated this on Thursday while addressing journalists after the opening ceremony of the U.S.–Nigeria Working Group inauguration in Abuja.
Idris noted that the engagement marks the third high-level interaction with senior U.S. government leadership since Nigeria’s visit to Washington in November 2025, following two congressional delegations hosted in December.
He described the engagements as evidence of a mature bilateral relationship rooted in trust, candour and shared responsibility, particularly in the areas of religious freedom, civilian protection and national security.
According to the minister, cooperation between Nigeria and the United States now spans military, intelligence and security collaboration, with enhanced intelligence sharing and closer coordination between U.S. AFRICOM and Nigeria’s military producing tangible operational gains.
He said these gains have been recorded across multiple theatres, including the North East under Operation HADIN KAI and the North West and North Central under Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
Idris also disclosed that the United States has committed to the timely delivery of outstanding military equipment procured over the past five years, including drones, helicopters, platforms, spare parts and associated support systems, while also indicating readiness to provide surplus defence equipment to Nigeria.
“We want Nigerians to know that this partnership is working and yielding tangible gains.”
He urged the public to remain patient, stressing that the cumulative impact of the cooperation will continue to strengthen national security outcomes.
On Nigeria’s domestic response, the minister recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared national security emergencies in vulnerable and high-risk areas, authorised intensified joint operations and directed sustained deployments of security forces to priority locations.
He further revealed that government is strengthening early-warning mechanisms and developing a national database to provide a single, authoritative source of accurate and verifiable data on deaths and casualties arising from violence, to improve accountability and evidence-based decision-making.
Idris added that the Federal Ministry of Justice, the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force are intensifying investigations and prosecutions related to terrorism, stressing that violence must be confronted not only with force but with justice.
