The explosions, which occurred around 7:05 p.m. during the Iftar period, targeted crowded areas including the Post Office axis, Monday Market and the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, according to a statement issued by the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI.
The military said suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers carried out the coordinated attacks in what it described as an attempt to inflict mass casualties and generate panic within the metropolis.
Security forces, including troops of Operation HADIN KAI working alongside Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams and other agencies, moved quickly to secure the affected locations, cordoning off the blast sites to prevent further casualties and possible secondary explosions.
Emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency and medical teams, evacuated injured victims to multiple health facilities across the city, including the General Hospital, Specialist Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where treatment is ongoing.
While casualty figures were not immediately confirmed, medical personnel continue to manage the injured as rescue and evacuation efforts persist across affected areas.
Preliminary intelligence suggests the attackers may have deployed multiple suicide operatives into the city as part of a coordinated plan to strike densely populated civilian targets, raising concerns about residual threats within the urban environment.
In response, security agencies have intensified surveillance operations, patrols and counter-IED measures across Maiduguri, with efforts underway to track down any remaining suspects and disrupt further attack attempts.
Residents have been urged to remain calm but vigilant, avoid high-density locations where possible and report suspicious movements or unattended items to security authorities.
The military expressed condolences to families of victims, reaffirming that ongoing operations remain focused on protecting civilians and dismantling terrorist networks responsible for the attacks.
The incident underscores the continued threat posed by asymmetric urban attacks in the North-East, particularly during predictable high-density periods such as religious observances, and signals a renewed operational focus on intelligence-led counter-IED measures within major population centres.
