🇳🇬Nigerian Army Expands Stabilisation Push in Zamfara as COAS Supports Farmers With Fertilizer Intervention

Nigeria’s counterinsurgency and anti-banditry operations in the North West are increasingly expanding beyond kinetic warfare into community stabilisation, food security support and civilian trust-building as the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, donated 400 bags of fertilizer to farmers in Zamfara State ahead of the 2026 farming season.

The intervention, coordinated through the Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, took place at the Palace of the Emir of Maru on Thursday and drew participation from military officers, traditional rulers, government officials and members of the farming community.

The fertilizer distribution comes amid growing concerns across northern Nigeria over the long-term economic impact of insecurity on agricultural production, rural livelihoods and food supply chains, particularly in states repeatedly affected by banditry attacks, displacement and farmer access restrictions.

A statement by the Media Information Officer of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, stated that the intervention formed part of the Chief of Army Staff’s broader Civil-Military Cooperation efforts aimed at supporting communities affected by insecurity while helping to restore local economic activity.

The initiative also reflects an evolving military stabilisation model increasingly being adopted across conflict-prone regions where security operations are now being combined with humanitarian support, infrastructure assistance and livelihood protection programmes.

Security and Farming Are Becoming Interconnected

For many rural communities across Zamfara and the wider North West, insecurity has increasingly become both a security crisis and an agricultural emergency.

Years of armed banditry, attacks on farming settlements, kidnappings and displacement have disrupted cultivation patterns, weakened local economies and contributed to wider food inflation pressures affecting parts of northern Nigeria.

Military authorities now appear increasingly conscious that long-term stability may depend not only on clearing criminal elements from contested areas, but also on helping communities safely return to productive economic activity.

Speaking during the distribution exercise, Theatre Commander of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Warrah Idris, represented by Deputy Theatre Commander, Air Vice Marshal Usman Abdullahi, said the intervention symbolised the Armed Forces’ commitment to rebuilding hope and strengthening peace within affected communities.

He reiterated that military operations against terrorists and criminal groups across Zamfara and the wider North West would continue alongside broader efforts to support civilian resilience and local recovery.

The Deputy Theatre Commander also urged beneficiaries to make effective use of the fertilizers during the farming season while encouraging residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible intelligence.

Traditional Institutions Remain Central

The ceremony further highlighted the continued role of traditional institutions as strategic stabilisation partners within conflict-affected communities.

Vice Chairman of Maru Local Government Area, Honourable Laminu Dansadau, described the intervention as timely and commended the Nigerian Army for supporting local farmers and contributing toward economic recovery efforts within the area.

Emir of Maru, His Royal Highness Alhaji Abubakar Gado Maigari, also praised the Chief of Army Staff for the initiative and assured that the fertilizers would be distributed fairly among genuine farmers across the emirate.

Across northern Nigeria, traditional rulers increasingly serve as critical intermediaries between security agencies and rural populations, particularly in regions where trust, local legitimacy and community intelligence remain essential to counter-banditry operations.

The Wider Strategic Message

Beyond the symbolic distribution itself, the intervention reflects a broader recalibration taking place within Nigeria’s military operations.

Security planners are increasingly recognising that military victories alone may prove unsustainable without parallel efforts to restore livelihoods, improve civilian confidence and rebuild economic activity in conflict-affected communities.

In Zamfara especially, where agriculture remains central to local survival and economic stability, restoring farming confidence has become deeply tied to wider security outcomes.

The fertilizer support initiative may therefore appear modest operationally.

Strategically, however, it signals a growing acknowledgement that food security, rural stability and counterinsurgency are now increasingly interconnected within Nigeria’s evolving security landscape.
