The Defence Headquarters has begun formal preparations for military support to Nigeria's 2027 General Elections, using a high-level seminar to reinforce professionalism, constitutional responsibility and operational neutrality ahead of the nationwide polls.

Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, disclosed that the one-day seminar, themed "The Role of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in the 2027 General Elections," brought together senior military officers, election managers, security agencies and other stakeholders to strengthen institutional coordination for election security.
During the event, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, represented by the Chief of Defence Training, Rear Admiral Abolade Ogunleye, stressed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to supporting free, fair and credible elections within the limits of the Constitution.
General Oluyede noted that the increasing pace of political activities ahead of 2027 makes early preparation essential, emphasizing that military personnel deployed under Operation SAFE CONDUCT 2027 must remain apolitical while carrying out election support duties.
He reminded participants that the Armed Forces' constitutional responsibility is to defend Nigeria's territorial integrity, suppress insurrection and provide aid to civil authorities whenever required, adding that professionalism, discipline, impartiality and respect for human rights must remain the guiding principles throughout election operations.
The Defence Chief further stated that the success of Operation SAFE CONDUCT 2027 would not be judged solely by the absence of violence but by strict compliance with constitutional provisions, operational neutrality and the protection of citizens' rights.
He urged commanders and staff officers to internalise the lessons from the seminar in preparation for increasingly complex security demands during the electoral cycle.
Delivering the keynote address, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan, represented by the Commission's Director of Legal Matters, commended the Defence Headquarters for initiating early strategic engagement.
He observed that credible elections depend on a secure environment and reaffirmed that while INEC remains constitutionally responsible for conducting elections and the Nigeria Police Force leads election security, the Armed Forces provide critical support whenever extraordinary security situations arise.
Professor Amupitan highlighted the military's role in protecting strategic infrastructure, securing electoral assets, supporting the movement of sensitive election materials and providing airlift capabilities to difficult terrain through the Nigerian Air Force. He also warned that insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, politically motivated violence, cyber-enabled threats, misinformation and disinformation remain significant risks requiring intelligence-led operations and stronger inter-agency collaboration.
The seminar reflects the Defence Headquarters' early institutional approach to election security planning, positioning professionalism, constitutional compliance and coordinated security operations as central pillars for safeguarding Nigeria's 2027 democratic process.
