Nigeria is repositioning its defence relationship with the United States towards future military capabilities, using innovation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and professional military education as new pillars of bilateral security cooperation alongside traditional counter-terrorism and intelligence partnerships.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Ministry that the strategic direction featured prominently when the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), who represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Richard Pheelangwah, received the former Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), General William E. Ward (Rtd), at the Ministry of Defence, Ship House, Abuja.
During the engagement, the Ministry reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to deepening defence cooperation with the United States across military training, intelligence sharing, maritime security, logistics support and professional military education, while expanding collaboration into emerging technologies required for modern defence planning and multi-domain operations.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister, Permanent Secretary Richard Pheelangwah described General Ward as a pioneering military leader whose role as AFRICOM's inaugural commander continues to influence security cooperation across the continent. He noted that evolving security threats now require stronger institutional partnerships built around innovation, technological advancement and enhanced capacity development.
Beyond existing military cooperation, discussions explored how African armed forces can better prepare for future conflicts through artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital transformation and the development of leaders capable of operating across increasingly complex operational environments. The meeting also examined lessons from contemporary security challenges and the importance of strengthening strategic partnerships that enhance regional stability.
General William E. Ward commended General Christopher Gwabin Musa for his leadership in both his previous role as Chief of Defence Staff and his current responsibilities as Minister of Defence. He observed that stronger Nigeria-United States cooperation should extend beyond defence into broader economic engagement while sustaining joint efforts to address emerging security threats.
The former AFRICOM commander also emphasised that cybersecurity has become an essential component of modern national defence architecture, adding that strong institutions, resilient societies and enduring family values remain important foundations for long-term national security.
The engagement reflects Nigeria's evolving defence diplomacy, where strategic international partnerships are increasingly being aligned with technological innovation, institutional capacity building and future operational readiness as the country modernises its defence architecture to address emerging security challenges.
