Nigeria's military leadership has intensified its drive towards defence self-reliance, with the Chief of Defence Staff, General OO Oluyede, reaffirming that expanding indigenous military manufacturing has become a strategic priority for improving operational readiness, reducing dependence on foreign weapons systems and strengthening long-term national defence capability.

The Director, Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba disclosed that the commitment was reaffirmed during General Oluyede's strategic visit to the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) Ordnance Factory in Kakuri, Kaduna.
The visit formed part of ongoing efforts by the Armed Forces of Nigeria to accelerate local defence production and consolidate Nigeria's defence industrialisation agenda.
During the inspection, the Chief of Defence Staff toured DICON's production lines, research facilities and manufacturing infrastructure, where Director General of DICON, Major General Babatunde Ibrahim Alaya, presented updates on the corporation's production capacity, ongoing projects and future expansion plans aimed at meeting the operational requirements of the Armed Forces.
General Oluyede commended DICON's management and workforce for advancing indigenous defence technology, noting that local production remains central to enhancing combat readiness, conserving foreign exchange, reducing reliance on imported military hardware and guaranteeing sustainable logistics support for military operations.
He reaffirmed Defence Headquarters' commitment to supporting DICON's transformation into a globally competitive defence manufacturing institution capable of supplying the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies with locally produced military equipment and technology.
The visit also featured an inspection of DICON's research and development facilities, where indigenous defence products were showcased, reinforcing the military's broader objective of promoting innovation, expanding local research capabilities and building a technologically resilient defence industry.
General Oluyede was accompanied by the Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Major General OT Olatoye, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Major General ASM Wase, and other senior military officers.
