🇳🇬 Nigeria, US Reinforce Defence Partnership Around Intelligence And Counterterrorism



Nigeria and the United States have reinforced their strategic defence and security partnership through high-level Washington talks focused on intelligence collaboration, military-to-military relations, operational coordination and counterterrorism.

The engagement centred on strengthening the shared security architecture between both countries as part of the second meeting of the US–Nigeria Joint Working Group, held from 12 to 13 August 2026.


According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Minister on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), led a high-level Nigerian delegation to a strategic meeting at the Pentagon with senior officials of the U.S. Department of War.


The Nigerian delegation included the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Taiwo Oyedele; General Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Defence Staff; Lieutenant General Parker Udiandeye, Chief of Defence Intelligence; and other senior officers of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.


The discussions with U.S. officials led by Julia Sokol, Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of War for International Security Affairs, continued the United States–Nigeria Joint Working Group Defence Bilateral Talks, with attention to shared security architecture, intelligence collaboration and operational synergies.


The wider diplomatic mission was led by the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, while the Joint Working Group was co-chaired by Ribadu and Allison Hooker, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs.


The talks also reviewed actionable progress and strategic frameworks following Nigeria's designation as a Country of Particular Concern. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to sustained dialogue, mutual respect and strategic cooperation in confronting global and regional security threats.


The engagement places intelligence cooperation and closer operational coordination at the centre of Nigeria’s effort to deepen its strategic security relationship with the United States, particularly as both countries seek stronger mechanisms for confronting terrorism and other shared threats.
