The Federal Government has signalled another step in its effort to strengthen security architecture across Nigeria's South-East, using newly commissioned Nigerian Air Force infrastructure in Abia State to reinforce regional military presence following recent strategic security engagements in the zone.

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), stated this during the commissioning of the Nigerian Air Force Administrative Complex in Umuahia, where he described the project as evidence of growing collaboration between the Federal Government and state governments to improve military readiness and deepen national security.
According to a statement issued by the Special Assistant to the Minister on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, the Minister of Defence noted that the investment demonstrates how sub-national governments can contribute meaningfully to strengthening Nigeria's defence capabilities.
The Minister linked the development to broader Federal Government efforts to consolidate security in the South-East, observing that the commissioning follows both the 60th memorial of Nigeria's first military Head of State, General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, and the maiden South-East Security Summit. He stressed that deliberations from the summit would be translated into concrete security actions rather than remain policy discussions.
General Musa emphasised that modern military effectiveness depends not only on combat platforms but also on strong administrative infrastructure capable of improving command coordination, personnel management and operational planning. He added that expanding such facilities enhances the Nigerian Air Force's capacity to support joint operations against terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, banditry and other emerging security threats.
Addressing Air Force personnel who will operate from the facility, the Minister urged them to strengthen civil-military relations by ensuring their presence improves security without disrupting civilian life. He maintained that military professionalism must be reflected not only in operational performance but also in constructive engagement with host communities.
Governor Alex Otti described the project as part of his administration's commitment to safeguarding lives and property, noting that improved security remains essential to economic development and investor confidence. He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the establishment of a Nigerian Air Force presence in Abia State.
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, assured that the facility and other assets entrusted to the Nigerian Air Force would be effectively utilised to improve operational coverage across the South-East, while strengthening joint military efforts to enhance regional peace and stability.
