The Minister made the call while declaring the summit open under the theme, “Sovereign Digital Backbone and Defence Innovation.” He described the gathering as an initiative to move Nigeria from reacting to changes in warfare towards deliberately developing the technologies, industrial capacity and expertise needed to prepare for future security threats.
The summit emerged from a Defence Roundtable held in June 2026, where participants agreed on the need for Nigeria to take a more deliberate approach to developing its future defence capabilities.
Minister Calls For Greater Investment In Indigenous Defence Technology
The Minister identified artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, cyber capabilities, data-driven intelligence and advanced digital infrastructure as increasingly important elements of modern warfare.
He stressed that Nigeria’s defence preparedness must extend beyond conventional military hardware to include the technologies, knowledge and digital systems shaping the future battlespace.
The Minister warned against continued dependence on external sources for critical defence technologies, urging investment in indigenous research and development, support for local innovators and the strengthening of Nigeria’s defence industrial base.
He also called for partnerships that would translate local expertise into practical capabilities for the Armed Forces, stressing that technological sovereignty requires sustained commitment and purposeful collaboration between the public and private sectors.
According to him, the summit should serve as more than a platform for speeches and presentations. It should provide an avenue for turning ideas into solutions, partnerships into projects and innovation into operational capability.
Government, Industry And Innovators Expected To Drive Defence Renewal
The Minister commended Kryterion and Defence Future Lab for laying the foundation for the summit in collaboration with his office.
He said the participation of government institutions, the Armed Forces, industry, academia and technology innovators reflected the broad cooperation required to strengthen Nigeria’s defence capabilities.
He expressed confidence in the country’s talent and creativity, noting that the transition towards greater technological self-reliance would require an enabling ecosystem, consistent investment and stronger partnerships capable of supporting local innovation.
The initiative, he explained, forms part of a wider Defence Renewal Architecture aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Summit Seeks Lasting Role In Africa’s Defence Technology Landscape
Declaring the maiden edition open, the Minister expressed the expectation that the Defence Futures Summit would develop into an enduring platform for defence innovation, technological sovereignty and Nigeria’s contribution to Africa’s evolving defence technology landscape.
He urged participants to engage constructively, pursue bold ideas and establish collaborations capable of delivering measurable benefits to national security.
The summit’s emphasis on digital infrastructure and indigenous innovation places the development of local technology alongside conventional defence capability as part of Nigeria’s preparation for future warfare.
Its longer-term significance will depend on how discussions and proposed partnerships translate into research, locally developed systems and practical capabilities for the Armed Forces.
