United Nations peacekeeping.

At
an Evening of Tributes held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites
in Asokoro, senior serving and retired officers, family members and colleagues
reflected on a soldier whose career became closely associated with professional
military leadership, conflict resolution and international peace and security.
Representing
the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of
Transformation and Innovation (Army), Major General Peter Okoye, delivered the
Army’s principal tribute, describing Obiakor as a distinguished soldier,
exceptional military leader, diplomat and international peacekeeper whose death
on 27 May 2026 marked the end of an important chapter in the history of the
Nigerian Army and international peacekeeping.
The
tribute traced Obiakor’s military career from his commissioning in 1973 through
command, staff and operational appointments in Nigeria and abroad, highlighting
his service as Commander of the ECOMOG Artillery Brigade in Liberia and his
subsequent role in coordinating Liberia’s elections.
His
connection with Liberia later developed into a wider international leadership
role. He became Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Liberia,
before being appointed in 2008 as the United Nations Military Adviser for
Peacekeeping Operations at headquarters in New York, becoming the first African
national to hold the position. The United Nations has separately confirmed his
appointment and described his career as one marked by leadership,
professionalism and commitment to international peace and security.
A
Nigerian Officer On The International Stage
The
former Chief of Defence Staff and former Chief of Army Staff, General Martin
Luther Agwai, offered a personal account of the professional confidence that
surrounded Obiakor’s rise through senior command and international
peacekeeping.
General
Agwai recalled moving Obiakor from his artillery background into command of 2
Division, where he said the officer demonstrated his versatility and performed
exceptionally well. He later recalled recommending Obiakor for the Force
Commander position in Liberia, drawing on his record there.
For
Agwai, the significance of Obiakor’s career ultimately rested on what he
represented beyond rank. “He was a great figure. A peacekeeper. A lover of
peace.”
Agwai
said Obiakor’s performance in conflict areas demonstrated his capacity to
represent Nigeria at home and abroad, while describing his death as a loss to
the military and to those who had benefited from his willingness to share his
knowledge.
That
assessment reinforces the central thread running through the tributes:
Obiakor’s influence was not confined to command appointments but extended into
the development of military professionalism and the projection of Nigerian
expertise within multinational peace operations.
From
Artillery Command To Peace Diplomacy
The
Commander Corps of Artillery, Major General John Olusegun Adeyemo, placed
Obiakor’s legacy within the professional history of the Nigerian Army’s
artillery community.
Adeyemo
described the late general as a mentor, standard-setter and guiding influence
on professionalism and specialist proficiency, while recalling his rise to the
rank of lieutenant general and his appointment as United Nations Military
Adviser.
His
tribute also connected Obiakor’s military identity with the broader
responsibilities of peacekeeping and diplomacy, remembering him as a soldier,
peacekeeper, diplomat and statesman.
The
Army’s tribute similarly stressed that Obiakor’s international assignments
demonstrated the capacity of Nigerian military professionals to operate within
complex multinational environments and contribute meaningfully to global peace.
The
Mentor Remembered By The Officer He Shaped
A
dimension of the tribute came from Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu,
Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, whose connection to
Obiakor was deeply personal.
Nafiu
had served as Obiakor’s aide-de-camp and regarded him not only as a former
superior but as a mentor and father figure whose influence extended well beyond
the formal boundaries of military service.
His
recollection moved away from appointments and international responsibilities to
the personal relationship behind the public record.
For
Nafiu, the relationship had begun when he was still a relatively junior
officer. He recalled being a lieutenant who had only recently been promoted to
captain when Obiakor noticed him during a parade and drew him into his
professional orbit.
That
early encounter became the foundation of a relationship that would shape
Nafiu’s military career and personal development.
The
significance of that relationship is important to understanding the wider
legacy being attributed to Obiakor. His influence was not confined to the
commands he held or the international positions he occupied. It was also
carried forward through officers he mentored, guided and prepared for
responsibility.
Nafiu’s
tribute among others including his course mates, kinsmen and children provided
the most intimate perspective on a career otherwise measured through military
commands, peacekeeping appointments and international recognition.
A
Legacy That Continued After Retirement
Obiakor’s
contribution did not end with his retirement from active military service. He
continued undertaking United Nations assignments involving conflict and
peacekeeping issues, including investigations and boards of inquiry connected
to South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Syria. The United
Nations also appointed him in 2018 to lead a special investigation following
the Kamanyola incident in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
That
post-retirement record strengthened the picture presented at the tribute: a
Nigerian officer whose professional value continued beyond uniform and formal
command, particularly in peacebuilding, conflict resolution and international
security.
For
the Nigerian Army, his career therefore represents more than an individual
record of advancement. It demonstrates how military professionalism developed
through national service can translate into regional peace operations and
international leadership.
The
tributes ultimately returned to the human meaning of that legacy. Beyond the
appointments, decorations and international recognition was a soldier
remembered by colleagues as a mentor, a professional and a man committed to
peace.
Obiakor’s
life thus leaves the Nigerian Army with a legacy that extends from the
discipline of military service to the wider responsibility of helping build and
sustain peace, both within Africa and on the global stage.
