Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.) OFR, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening military relations with the United States, particularly in the fight against terrorism, during a meeting with Major General Matthew Brown, Commander, U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF), who was on an official working visit to Abuja.
A statement by the Special Assistant to the Minister on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, said the visit was aimed at reviewing ongoing joint security initiatives and developing a more result-oriented strategic framework for future defence collaboration.
The Minister appreciated the continued partnership of the United States, noting that collaborative security operations in the North East and Lake Chad Basin had contributed to troop morale and operational effectiveness. He identified Special Forces joint training, intelligence sharing and capacity building, border surveillance and security, counter-improvised explosive device support, and defence infrastructure modernisation as priority areas for continued cooperation.
Brown conveyed early Independence Day felicitations and described the military-to-military relationship between Nigeria and the United States as one built over decades of cooperation and mutual trust.
He also referenced successful counter-terrorism engagements against ISIS-affiliated groups in Africa, while clarifying that following the departure of soldiers from the Combined Special Task Force operating in Bauchi, current U.S. military activities in Nigeria are temporary and focused on institutional support and collaboration.
Brown said the visit was also intended to deepen understanding of Nigeria’s defence priorities and align broader U.S. support, particularly in intelligence sharing and other areas of military cooperation.
