Preventing Proliferation of Illicit Small Arms, It's Impact On Gender Violence, National Instability

In order to ensure that gender perspectives are integrated into national and regional strategies in control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons put together a Workshop on Gender Mainstreaming in Preventing the Proliferation of Small Arms And Light Weapons In Nigeria and West African Region.
The workshop held at the National Counter Terrorism Centre Abuja Nigeria brought together security experts and policy makers in the defence and security sector to spotlight the ibfluence of illicit small arms and light weapons on gender based violence in Nigeria and the West African Region. 

Speaking at the workshop, National Coordinator, National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, retired Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Johnson Babatunde Kokumo said the illegal flow of small arms and light weapons has devastating consequences, fuelling violence, instability and insecurity in various parts of the world hence the issue is not only a national concern but also a matter of international importance.

According to the national Coordinator the victims of the most traumatic effects of crises are usually women and children hence the need for a gender-sensitive approach to disarmament and security policies. 
"This Workshop on Gender Mainstreaming is especially important as corresponds with the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security, which emphasizes the role of women in conflict prevention and peacebuilding. It also complements the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons, which underscores the need for regional collaboration to tackle the proliferation of these weapons"

"It directly aligns with the strategic objectives of the National Security Adviser, who is committed to fostering a more inclusive and effective approach to national security.
Gender mainstreaming in Small Arms and Light Weapons control is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic move, as the grave impact of armed conflict on women and children highlights the need for a gender-sensitive approach to disarmament and security policies" stated the National Coordinator.

The goal of the workshop DCP Kokumo said is to provide a platform for constructive dialogue, exchange of ideas, and formulation of practical recommendations. 
 
It also engenders discuss on how to empower women and indude them more actively in decision-making processes, not only as victims of armed violence but also as critical agents of change in peace and security efforts.
