Legislative Backing Strengthens National Centre For Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons - NSA

The legislative backing and the assent to a Bill establishing the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons by President Bola Tinubu has strengthened the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapon's mandate, paving the way for more coordinated and decisive action against proliferation of illegal arms. 

The National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu stated this at a Workshop on Gender Mainstreaming in Preventing the Proliferation of Small Arms And Light Weapons In Nigeria and West African Region, organised by the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons. 

Speaking at the workshop held at the National Counter Terrorism Centre, office of the National Security Adviser in Abuja Nigeria's Capital, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu who was represeneted by the Director External Affairs, Ambassador Ibrahim Babani refenced the key international frameworks the workshop was anchored on which include the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 which emphasizes the critical need to protect women from the impacts of conflict, while also ensuring their full participation in peacebuilding and security initiatives. 
According to the NSA, the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons underscores the collective responsibility of the region in curting the spread of dangerous weapons, abuse of which directly affect women and children in conflict zones.

This according to the NSA aligns with national and international commitments to ensuring that women play a central role in peace and security processes and reflects the Federal Government's wider efforts to address the myriads of security challenges confronting our dear nation. 

He highlighted the importance of gender mainstreaming in preventing the proliferation of Small arms and light weapons which ensures that the approach to security is inclusive and sustainable.  

Retired Major General Anthony Atolagbe a Military Consultant, Security Expert and Analyst delivered Lecture at the event that highlighted the four Pillars of Women in Peace and Security to include participation of women in disarmament decision making, arms control programmes, Prevention of the Proliferation of small arms and early warning signs for conflict related sexual violence, protection and Relieve and Recovery.
