The emphasis emerged during a national study tour by participants of the Advanced Defence Intelligence Officers Course 16/2026 to Headquarters 2 Division, Nigerian Army, at Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan, where the participants examined the security environment within the Division’s area of responsibility.
The Acting Deputy Director, 2 Division Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, provided the information in a statement on 27 August 2026. During the engagement, the General Officer Commanding 2 Division, Major General Auwalu Mahmuda, challenged the participants to apply the knowledge acquired through the study tour to developing workable solutions to contemporary security threats.
Mahmuda identified kidnapping and other criminal activities among the challenges confronting the Division’s area of responsibility, while drawing particular attention to the security situation around the Old Oyo National Park.
The GOC also underscored the value of professional engagement between operational formations and intelligence institutions, noting that such interactions create opportunities for knowledge sharing and a clearer understanding of security conditions on the ground.
The significance of the study tour therefore extends beyond exposure to a particular operational environment. For intelligence professionals, direct engagement with commanders and operational personnel provides an opportunity to connect intelligence doctrine with the realities of threat assessment, deployment, criminal activity and the practical demands of security operations.
From Intelligence Training To Operational Application
The Commandant of the Defence Intelligence College, Commodore Usman Mainasara Bugaje, disclosed that the institution has operated for more than 25 years and that the national study tour forms part of the mandatory requirements for successful completion of the course.
Bugaje also highlighted the importance of integrated intelligence to peace and security, reinforcing the need for intelligence capabilities to operate across institutional boundaries rather than in isolation.
The engagement included an operational briefing by the Commanding Officer, Administrative Battalion, 2 Division Garrison, Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Simon, who presented the participants with an assessment of the security environment in Oyo State and the operational activities being undertaken by the Division.
The briefing was followed by an interactive session in which participants engaged with the operational issues raised and sought clarification on aspects of the security environment.
For a security system confronting threats that increasingly cut across conventional institutional boundaries, the connection between intelligence education and operational formations remains particularly important. Study tours of this nature can help ensure that professional training is informed by current realities while allowing operational commanders to communicate emerging intelligence requirements and threat patterns directly to practitioners.
The immediate challenge, however, is converting such exposure into usable intelligence products, improved threat assessment and recommendations that can support commanders and policymakers. That is ultimately where the value of advanced intelligence training will be measured.
