The Armed Forces of Nigeria detailed progress
in counterterrorism operations and reforms during a two-day citizen-military
dialogue in Kaduna.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria have reaffirmed
their commitment to restoring peace and strengthening regional stability across
Northern Nigeria, with Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Christopher Gwabin
Musa outlining key military achievements during a high-level forum in Kaduna.
According to a statement issued by Brigadier
General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, General Musa made the
remarks on Tuesday during the Government–Citizens Engagement Forum organized by
the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation.
Addressing stakeholders that included
traditional rulers, scholars, civil society representatives and policy leaders,
General Musa described the forum as a crucial checkpoint for evaluating the
administration’s performance in security delivery under President Bola Ahmed
Tinubu.
Among the major achievements highlighted were
the creation of the Joint Doctrine and Warfare Centre in Abuja and a new
Department of Training at Defence Headquarters, both designed to enhance
operational synergy and tactical readiness. General Musa also disclosed that
more than 800 Special Forces operatives had graduated under his leadership,
with more undergoing intensive training in Jaji and Nasarawa to counter
asymmetric threats.
The CDS further announced the restructuring
of North-West operations into Operation FANSAN YAMMA,
the deployment of high-readiness units, and the establishment of Special Forces
Brigades in Kaduna and Niger States. Additional operational zones have also
been activated under Operations HADIN KAI and
FANSAN YAMMA.
In operational outcomes, the Armed Forces
report that over 3,000 terrorists and bandits have been neutralized, more than
120,000 insurgents have surrendered, and over 2,000 kidnapped victims have been
rescued across the North since 2023. The statement also noted the recovery of
more than 2,300 weapons and 72,000 rounds of ammunition.
Beyond combat achievements, General Musa
emphasized non-kinetic strategies including community sports competitions,
advocacy outreach, and consistent engagement with traditional leaders and
governors to rebuild trust and facilitate the return of displaced persons.
In terms of economic recovery, the military
has supported local empowerment through the setup of ranches, schools, and
ICT-based training centres across conflict-affected areas in the North-East and
North-West, while strengthening local procurement through defence institutions
like the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) and the Air Force
Institute of Technology (AFIT).
The statement further highlighted regional
security diplomacy, including General Musa’s official visit to Niger Republic
in August 2024 and the upcoming African Chiefs of Defence
Conference, scheduled to be hosted by Nigeria from
25–27 August 2025 in Abuja.
