Shiroro
Local Government Area, Niger State — A fatal boat accident on Saturday claimed
the lives of at least 12 people, with several others still unaccounted for. The
incident occurred at approximately 11:45 a.m. near Kwata as the boat was en
route to the popular Zumba market.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA)
Director General, Abdullahi Baba Arah, confirmed the tragedy, which involved
both passengers and cargo on board.
According to Dr. Ibrahim Hussaini, Director of
Information and Special Duties at NSEMA, only three individuals — the boat’s
driver and two passengers — were rescued from the capsized vessel. One survivor
is currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Kuta.
Local divers, NSEMA officials, and
community volunteers have launched an intensive search and rescue operation to
locate those still missing.
Hon. Akilu Isiyaku Kuta, Chairman of
Shiroro Local Government, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and
praised the prompt response of rescue teams working under difficult conditions.
He confirmed that 12 bodies had been recovered at the time of reporting.
The incident has renewed calls for
strict adherence to waterway safety regulations. Despite ongoing efforts by the
Niger State Government, N-HYPPADEC, and the National Inland Waterways Authority
(NIWA) to distribute life jackets to riverine communities, many passengers
continue to travel without them. Authorities warn that neglecting safety
protocols remains a major factor behind the rising fatalities in boat accidents
across the state.
