Ghana’s Black Queens
beat South Africa 4–3 on penalties to finish third in WAFCON 2024 after a 1–1
draw in regulation time.
Ghana’s Black Queens claimed the bronze medal at the
2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a tense 4–3 penalty shootout win
over South Africa in Casablanca on Friday night.
The clash, held at Stade Larbi
Zaouli, ended 1–1 after regulation time, but it was the West Africans who kept
their composure from the spot to earn their place on the podium.
South Africa’s Nonhlanhla Mthandi
gave Banyana Banyana the lead with a sharp finish just before halftime in the
45th minute. But the Black Queens responded in the second half with sustained
pressure that paid off in the 68th minute, when goalkeeper Andile Dlamini
turned a deflected header from Alice Kusi into her own net.
The goal shifted momentum firmly in
Ghana’s favour, and despite chances at both ends, neither side could find a
winner in regular time.
In the shootout, Ghana edged the
reigning champions 4–3, capping off what has been described as one of the
tournament’s most dramatic matches.
The result marks a powerful
resurgence for the Black Queens, who leave Morocco with bronze — and a message
that they remain a force in African women’s football.
