President Tinubu dispatched the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs to Ghana
following the circulation of viral protest videos demanding the deportation of
Nigerians.
Amid
growing online agitation over alleged anti-Nigerian protests in Ghana, Minister
of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has appealed
for calm, assuring that the situation on the ground is under control and
largely peaceful.
According
to a statement by Special Assistant on Communication and New Media, Magnus Eze,
the Minister addressed the issue during a joint press conference in Accra on
Wednesday with her Ghanaian counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel
Ablakwa.
“We
are here in the Republic of Ghana on a fact-finding mission as special envoy of
President Bola Tinubu as a result of recent disturbances that have made the
rounds in Nigeria,” said Odumegwu-Ojukwu.
She
noted that the viral videos depicting civil unrest and threats against
Nigerians prompted the President to dispatch her to Ghana to assess the
situation firsthand.
“We
are pleased to note that things are rather calm here. Since we arrived, I
haven’t seen people burning tyres in the streets or carrying placards
everywhere calling for Nigerians to be deported,” Odumegwu-Ojukwu said,
crediting the Ghanaian government for swift intervention to de-escalate
tensions.
She
urged against the spread of inciteful content that may strain the long-standing
relationship between Nigeria and Ghana. Her delegation, she added, had engaged
with Ghanaian authorities, community leaders, and stakeholders to foster mutual
understanding.
The
Minister also proposed the institutionalisation of the Nigeria-Ghana Joint
Commission to strengthen diplomatic cooperation and promote citizen-to-citizen
engagement between both countries.
In
his remarks, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Ablakwa, reaffirmed Ghana’s
commitment to protecting all residents—citizens and non-citizens alike—while
stressing the need for lawful conduct by all communities.
He
clarified that the viral videos did not reflect the actual situation and
disclosed that the Ghanaian government had investigated a Nigerian accused of
attempting to form a kingdom within Ghana, adding that no territorial threat
was intended.
Ablakwa
cautioned both nations against allowing misinformation to rekindle historical
tensions, citing Ghana’s Aliens Repatriation Order and Nigeria’s 1983 “Ghana
Must Go” episode as past examples of diplomatic strain.
“Regardless
of our shared history, if these things are not managed well, it will take us
back to certain dark occurrences in our history,” he warned.
