Dino Melaye announced his resignation from the PDP via a letter dated July 4 but made public on July 31 through his verified X account.
In a surprising political move, former senator for
Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP), citing the party’s "lack of capacity to offer credible
leadership" as the reason for his exit.
Melaye, who was the PDP’s candidate
in the November 2023 Kogi State governorship election, addressed his
resignation to the party chairman in Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local
Government Area of Kogi State. Though dated July 4, 2025, the letter was made
public on Thursday, July 31, via his official X account.
“I hereby tender my resignation from
the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement,” wrote Melaye. “This
decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the
party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms
that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”
The former senator noted that the
decision followed “deep reflection” on the state of the PDP and its direction.
He added that he could no longer participate in or support the party’s agenda
in good conscience and asked that his letter be accepted as an immediate and
total withdrawal from all party engagements.
Though Melaye did not announce a new
political destination, his resignation is expected to stir speculation within
the national opposition landscape as the PDP grapples with internal discord and
shifting loyalties.
Melaye concluded his letter by
expressing appreciation for the opportunity to serve within the PDP and
acknowledged the time spent with the party.
