Nigeria’s women’s national team returned home after securing a record-extending 10th WAFCON championship with a dramatic 3–2 win over Morocco in the final
The Super Falcons of Nigeria landed in Abuja on a chartered ValuJet flight from Rabat to a thunderous reception after their stunning 3–2 victory against Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The win marked their 10th continental crown, reaffirming Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football.
A jubilant
crowd of supporters, including senior officials from the National Sports
Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation, lined up at Nnamdi Azikiwe
International Airport to greet the triumphant team.
To mark the
achievement, a trophy parade has been planned across the Federal Capital
Territory. The celebrations will climax with a reception by President Bola
Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, followed by a victory concert at Eagles
Square at 7 p.m., featuring top Nigerian music artists.
The Falcons’
journey to the title was flawless—six wins in six matches, including a
dramatic semi-final triumph over South Africa. Four Nigerian players—Rasheedat
Ajibade, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Michelle Alozie, and Esther Okoronkwo—earned
spots in CAF’s Team of the Tournament.
Head Coach Justin
Madugu guided the team to what many are calling a beautiful comeback
story, leading a new generation of players to continental glory.
