Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima met with heads of leading global food agencies to rally support for agricultural transformation and Lake Chad restoration, amid global discussions at the UN Food Systems Summit.
Vice President Kashim Shettima held a series of
high-level bilateral meetings in Rome with global agricultural and development
leaders, advancing Nigeria’s push for enhanced food security and environmental
restoration.
In separate talks with Director-General of the Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO), Qu Dongyu; President of the International Fund
for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Álvaro Lario; and World Food Programme
Executive Director, Cindy McCain, the Vice President sought deeper
international partnerships for reviving the Lake Chad region and scaling the
country’s Green Revolution Project.
At the meeting with FAO’s Qu Dongyu, Shettima stressed
the urgent need for multilateral cooperation to address the Lake Chad Basin’s
worsening crises—ranging from climate-induced desertification to regional
insecurity.
“The revival of the Lake Chad region, which is being
threatened by multidimensional challenges such as environmental degradation,
climate change, humanitarian crises, and conflict, requires a multi-pronged
approach: development initiatives, conflict resolution, regional cooperation,
and large-scale infrastructure,” the Vice President stated.
He urged FAO to take a leading role in supporting
Nigeria’s year-round farming and regional resilience goals.
Similar themes were raised in engagements with IFAD and WFP, where Shettima emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s Green Revolution strategy to boost productivity, create jobs, and transform Nigeria into a regional agricultural powerhouse.
