Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, delivered a powerful address at the IPU-UN 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments, calling on lawmakers to embrace courage, inclusion, and cross-border collaboration in tackling global turmoil.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged fellow
parliamentarians from around the world to act with unity and resolve in the
face of global crises, during his address at the high-level summit in Geneva
hosted by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations.
“We face armed conflict, climate disruption, and youth
disillusionment… But we are not defined by what we face, but by how we rise,”
Akpabio said, drawing parallels between Nigeria’s resilience and the global
demand for bold leadership.
Referencing the theme “A World in Turmoil:
Multilateralism for Peace, Justice and Prosperity for All”, Akpabio
described the urgency of legislating for peace and prosperity in a world beset
by war, poverty, and displacement.
He highlighted Nigeria’s recent legislative
interventions—such as the Terrorism Prevention Act, the Control of Small Arms
and Light Weapons Act, and the Not Too Young To Run Act—as models for countries
seeking reform in the midst of crisis.
Akpabio emphasized inclusive development, digital
innovation, and education reform as key pillars for long-term stability, noting
that multilateralism must be “more than rhetoric” but a “movement of resolve.”
“Let us therefore stand in partnership, committed to
peace, justice, and shared destiny,” he declared.
The conference gathers parliamentary leaders from around
the world every five years to align legislative action with global priorities.
