Turkey has introduced two cutting-edge air-launched bombs — the GAZAP (Wrath) and the Hayalet (Ghost) — as part of its intensifying military export campaign and domestic arms development.

The GAZAP is a nearly one-tonne thermobaric bomb weighing 970 kilograms. Often referred to as a "vacuum bomb," it uses atmospheric oxygen mixed with fuel to trigger a searing, high-temperature blast. A secondary detonation greatly expands its destructive radius, reportedly up to a kilometre — making it Turkey’s most powerful conventional bomb to date, according to state-linked defence outlets.

The second bomb, the Hayalet, is a bunker-buster designed to penetrate up to seven metres of reinforced concrete. Both weapons are compatible with US-made F-16 fighter jets, a key platform in Turkey’s air fleet.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has repeatedly pledged to increase the country’s military production capacity, especially after tensions flared during the 12-day Iran–Israel war earlier this year. In June, he vowed to boost Turkey’s stockpile of medium- and long-range missiles, citing deterrence and national security concerns.

These new weapons reinforce Ankara’s strategic shift toward indigenous defence technologies and underscore its bid to become a top-tier arms supplier within NATO and beyond.
