Retired Brigadier General SK Usman mni fnipr, who once served under him, delivers a deeply personal tribute, capturing Mana’s discipline, humour, and humanity.
In a heartfelt reflection, Brigadier General SK Usman described the late Colonel Mana as “an extraordinary officer and gentleman, whose service and sacrifice left an indelible mark on the Nigerian Army and the nation.”
Born in 1950, Mohammed Mana rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Army with distinction. He held key command and staff positions, including at the Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria, and the Guards Brigade, Abuja. His career was marked by professionalism, dedication, and a deep sense of duty to his country.
General Kukasheka recalled serving directly under Mana, noting his strict but fatherly leadership style. “He demanded excellence, yet carried himself with humility and humour. He taught us that discipline and compassion are not mutually exclusive.”
Colonel Mana’s career was cut short in 1999 when President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration forced the premature retirement of over 200 officers. Yet, he transitioned into politics, representing Adamawa North Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate from 2007. There, he contributed to key committees, advocating for justice, security, and development.
General Usman highlighted his ability to adapt seamlessly from the barracks to the Senate chamber. “In uniform or mufti, Colonel Mana remained true to his calling - to serve his people with honesty, courage, and vision.”
Beyond duty, he was remembered for his warmth and mentorship. Young officers, colleagues, and constituents alike testify to his open door and wise counsel. His death, Usman stressed, leaves a vacuum not just in his family, but in the larger community of those he guided.
“Colonel Mana’s legacy is that of a patriot who gave his all to Nigeria. He was a soldier, a statesman, and above all, a man of integrity. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” Usman concluded.
