The renewed diplomatic push comes as the Gaza death toll surpasses 62,000 and concerns grow over potential forced relocations of Palestinians.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said on Monday that his Qatari
counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, had arrived in Cairo to
discuss the resumption of talks between Israel and Hamas. A Hamas delegation
has also met with Egyptian and Qatari officials as part of these efforts.
Abdelatty
said mediators were exerting maximum pressure on both sides, striving to
implement a US proposal for a 60-day ceasefire during which negotiations for a
permanent resolution would take place. The discussions also include options for
the release of all hostages in one phase, contingent on an end to hostilities.
Speaking
alongside Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa outside the Egyptian gate
of the Rafah crossing, Abdelatty emphasized Egypt’s firm opposition to plans by
Israeli leaders for mass relocation of Palestinians from Gaza. He described
such schemes as “heinous” and said Egypt would neither participate in nor allow
them.
Palestinians
and much of the international community have decried proposed relocations as
forcible expulsions, citing the uninhabitable conditions in much of Gaza caused
by ongoing Israeli air and ground operations. Abdelatty warned that relocation
plans could undermine decades of Palestinian aspirations for an independent
state.
Fact-Check & Background
Egypt has long played a mediating role in Israeli–Palestinian conflicts, hosting talks between Hamas, the Palestinian Authority, and Israel.
Qatar has frequently acted as a financial backer and mediator, particularly in humanitarian and reconstruction efforts in Gaza.
The US has proposed a 60-day ceasefire as an interim measure, though previous efforts have stalled.
Gaza’s Health Ministry reports over 62,000 fatalities since the outbreak of the conflict following Hamas’ October 2023 attack on Israel.
Proposed relocation plans by Israel have drawn criticism internationally as potential forcible displacement of Palestinians.
