Thompson had defeated Lyles at Saturday’s Silesia Diamond League race, ending a rivalry dating back to last year’s Olympic 100m final, but will now focus on recovery ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo this September.

Media reports confirmed that Thompson, who clocked 9.87 seconds to beat Lyles’ 9.90 in Silesia, is unlikely to compete again before the global championships. The Jamaican remains the athlete to beat after his season-best 9.75 seconds at the Jamaican Championships in June.

Lyles, whose season started late due to an ankle injury, will face another Jamaican contender in Lausanne—Oblique Seville, who defeated him at the London Diamond League meet in July.

In other news from Lausanne, world champion Shericka Jackson is also absent from the women’s 200 metres, having posted a season-best 22.17 seconds to win in Silesia on Saturday.

Fact-Check & Background
Thompson and Lyles have developed one of the most closely followed sprint rivalries since the 2024 Olympic 100m final, where Lyles edged Thompson by five thousandths of a second.

The Diamond League is a key series of elite track and field competitions, with Lausanne hosting its annual meeting as part of the tour.

Thompson’s withdrawal highlights ongoing injury management ahead of major championships.

Shericka Jackson, reigning world champion in the 200m, continues to focus on peak performance for the World Championships in Tokyo.
