President John Dramani Mahama has called for three days of national mourning following a fatal helicopter crash that killed eight individuals on Wednesday, prompting the suspension of all his official duties for the rest of the week.

President John Dramani Mahama has halted all official engagements and public appearances following a tragic military helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, claiming the lives of eight individuals, including high-ranking government and security personnel.

The announcement was made in a press statement released by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu. The statement confirmed that a three-day period of national mourning begins today, Thursday, 7th August 2025.




As part of the mourning directives, the Chief of Staff ordered that all national flags be flown at half-mast across the Republic until further notice. The President expressed “profound sorrow” and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang led a delegation of senior government officials, National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives, and the Military High Command to officially notify the affected families of their losses.

Among the victims mourned were:

·        Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed

·        Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Minuru Limuna

·        Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah



Separate condolence visits were also made by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who travelled to Koforidua to meet the mother of Dr Omane Boamah.

In addition, two other teams were deployed to Takoradi and other parts of the country to console the families of the helicopter crew, NDC Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, and Deputy Director-General of NADMO, Samuel Aboagye.

The presidency urged all Ghanaians to observe the mourning period “with solemnity and reflection.”
