Russia’s Krasheninnikov volcano erupts for the first time in hundreds of years, triggering emergency alerts after a major seismic event.

A remote volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula erupted dramatically overnight into Sunday, spewing dense ash clouds over the Pacific and marking what scientists are calling the first confirmed eruption in over 600 years.

The Krasheninnikov volcano, located within the Kronotsky Reserve, ejected volcanic ash up to 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) into the sky, according to monitoring staff on site. The eruption followed a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the region midweek—one of the strongest quakes ever recorded in Russia’s Far East.

The Kamchatka Emergency Ministry announced that the ash plume was drifting eastward toward the Pacific Ocean. Fortunately, “there are no populated areas along its path, and no ashfall has been recorded in inhabited localities,” the ministry said via Telegram.

The volcanic activity triggered a 7.0-magnitude aftershock and a brief tsunami warning, which was later lifted by the Ministry for Emergency Services. Three districts in Kamchatka were initially placed on alert.

“This is the first historically confirmed eruption of the Krasheninnikov volcano in 600 years,” said Head of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team, Olga Girina, speaking to RIA Novosti.

The Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Program, however, lists the last eruption date as 1550—475 years ago—highlighting a discrepancy yet to be resolved by geologists.

Though the volcano’s intensity has reportedly begun to subside, authorities warned that “moderate explosive activity” may persist in the coming days.

The eruption comes just days after the devastating earthquake sent ripples across the Pacific. Tsunami waves reached Japan and Alaska, with alerts issued as far as Hawaii and the west coasts of the Americas. Fortunately, Russia’s Pacific coastline was largely spared from significant damage.
