The UK Met Office issued an amber wind warning as Storm Floris disrupted travel, power supply, and major tourism events in Scotland.

Northern Britain was lashed by fierce winds and torrential rain on Monday as Storm Floris brought summer chaos to Scotland, with authorities scrambling to contain damage to power lines, transportation infrastructure, and tourism activities.

The UK’s Meteorological Office raised an “amber” weather alert across parts of Scotland, warning of life-threatening risks due to gusts reaching 90mph (145kph), particularly in coastal regions.

Network Rail Scotland reported widespread tree falls and extensive damage to overhead electrical lines, forcing train cancellations throughout the country. Ferry crossings were also halted, and travel chaos extended to parts of Northern Ireland, Wales, and northern England.

More than 22,000 homes were left without electricity, according to Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, while mobile homes were reported blown over on the Isle of Skye.

Police Scotland advised campervan users to remain parked in safe, sheltered zones until winds subside.

The timing of the storm could not have been worse, hitting during peak summer tourism season. In Edinburgh, where thousands gathered for the world-renowned Fringe Festival and the Royal Military Tattoo, organizers were forced to cancel Monday’s performance at the castle due to safety concerns.

Minister for Justice and Home Affairs, Angela Constance urged the public to take precautions akin to a winter journey.

“Please make sure you’ve got warm clothes, food, water, plenty of fuel and that your mobile phone is charged up,” she said.

ScotRail added a safety reminder to residents: “Anyone with garden equipment, such as tents, trampolines or furniture, should secure items so they don’t blow onto the tracks and interfere with lineside equipment.”

Meteorologists say Storm Floris is one of the most intense summer windstorms in recent years and warned of lingering effects through the week.
