A medical charity’s mission turned
deadly after its light aircraft crashed into a residential building in Nairobi,
killing six and injuring others.
Six people
have been confirmed dead after a light aircraft operated by Amref Flying
Doctors crashed in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, on Thursday afternoon.
According to
Kiambu County Commissioner, Henry Wafula, the Cessna aircraft had taken
off from Wilson Airport and was headed for Hargeisa, Somalia when it
lost radio and radar contact with air traffic control just three minutes after
departure. It later crashed into a residential building in the Githurai
area, bursting into flames.
The victims
include four people on board — doctors, nurses, and the pilot — and two
people on the ground. Two others sustained serious injuries and are
receiving treatment.
The Kenya
Civil Aviation Authority confirmed the plane’s sudden loss of
communication, prompting immediate emergency alerts. The Kenya Defence
Forces and the National Police Service were deployed to the scene
for search and recovery operations, as well as to secure the crash site.
In a
statement, Amref Flying Doctors CEO, Stephen Gitau said, “At this time,
we are cooperating fully with relevant aviation authorities and emergency
response teams to establish the facts surrounding the situation.”
Eyewitness
accounts captured
the shock of the incident. Patricia Kombo, a passenger in a cab passing near
the crash site, recounted to the BBC: “We heard a loud bang and a red flash.
Before I could take my phone to record, the flash was gone and smoke was
billowing. People were screaming and running… then we discovered it was a plane
crash.”
Investigators
have been dispatched to determine the cause of the accident.
In a separate
incident the same day, at least four people died when a train collided with
a bus at a railway crossing near Naivasha town. The Kenya Pipeline
Company, which owned the bus, confirmed it was carrying staff after their
morning shift. All injured staff were taken to hospital.
