UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body sanctioned both players for procedural misconduct under anti-doping regulations, stressing that no failed drug tests were involved.
Barcelona’s Champions League campaign ended in controversy this week after star
forwards Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal were fined by UEFA for breaching
post-match anti-doping procedures.
Following
their 4-3 defeat to Inter Milan in the semi-final second leg at the San Siro,
both players failed to proceed immediately to the designated doping control
station, as stipulated by competition rules. The European football governing
body’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body confirmed on Friday that the
breach was procedural and not related to any failed doping tests.
Lewandowski
and Yamal were each handed €5,000 penalties, while Barcelona head coach Hansi
Flick and his assistant Marcus Sorg faced harsher punishment — €20,000 fines
and one-match suspensions — for misconduct and breach of UEFA’s general
principles of conduct during and after the game.
Spanish
sports outlets Marca and AS reported that the players were delayed in attending
the test due to post-match engagements, with no evidence of
performance-enhancing substance use.
The defeat
in Milan ended Barcelona’s hopes of reaching the Champions League final, as
Inter advanced on a 6-5 aggregate scoreline.
The disciplinary ruling serves as a reminder of UEFA’s strict enforcement of procedural rules, even when no doping violation occurs. The club has yet to announce whether it will appeal the sanctions.
Fact-check & Background Context:
- UEFA’s anti-doping regulations require players to report immediately after the match for testing when selected.
- Similar fines have been issued in past seasons for procedural breaches without failed tests.
- The ruling came after Barcelona’s elimination from the 2024–25 Champions League at the hands of Inter Milan.
