Nigeria remain Africa’s top-ranked
women’s football team, holding firm at 36th in the FIFA Women’s World Ranking
released Thursday.
The Super Falcons’ commanding display
at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations
(WAFCON) in Morocco ensured their position as Africa’s highest-ranked women’s football team in the
latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking, released Thursday.
Despite significant movement in the
global standings — with world champions Spain
leapfrogging the United States to reclaim top spot and Bangladesh making a historic 24-place jump — Nigeria’s
consistency kept them unmoved from 36th place.
The Falcons began the July
international window with a goalless friendly against Portugal in Lisbon, before dominating Group B at the
WAFCON with wins over Tunisia
and Botswana, and a draw against
Algeria in a match where head
coach Justine Madugu rested key
players, having already secured the group’s top spot.
In the knockout stages, Nigeria
thrashed Zambia 5-0 in the
quarter-finals — a result many saw as symbolic revenge for their defeat in the
2022 third-place playoff. They edged defending champions South Africa 2-1 in the semi-finals
before staging a dramatic comeback in the final against hosts Morocco, overturning a two-goal deficit
to win 3-2 in what is already being hailed as one of the greatest WAFCON finals
ever.
Nigeria’s unbeaten run — five wins
and one draw — brought their ranking points up to 1630.83, a gain of 7.54 from the previous 1623.29.
Elsewhere in Africa, South Africa retained 54th position
despite losing all three knockout games and dropping 22.92 points. Morocco slipped from 63rd to 64th
despite reaching the final, while Zambia
remained 65th. Ghana dropped
slightly to 67th, with Cameroon
and Ivory Coast also slipping in
the rankings.
Botswana were Africa’s biggest movers,
climbing seven places to 146th after strong performances despite losses to
Algeria, Nigeria, and Tunisia.
Globally, Spain reclaimed top spot after reaching the UEFA Women’s
Euro 2025 final, while France
climbed to sixth and Brazil
slipped to seventh despite winning their continental title. Bangladesh recorded the biggest leap, up
24 spots and 80.51 points, following a successful Women’s World Cup qualifying
run.
According to FIFA, 196 international matches were played
during the ranking window. The next FIFA Women’s World Ranking will be
published on 11 December 2025.
