The two-week mission reinforced New York’s largest public university system’s strategy to boost global competitiveness by deepening partnerships in Nigeria, Kenya, and Rwanda.
According to a statement from the Office of Communications and Marketing, SUNY Oswego, signed by its Director Tim Nekritz, the visit underscored SUNY’s long-term commitment to Africa.
The State University of New York (SUNY) Africa Initiative sent senior leaders on a July 11–23 journey to strengthen international education, workforce development, and cultural exchange.
According to SUNY Oswego President Peter Nwosu, “Returning to my homeland and visiting other places to share stories of success and opportunities available through SUNY was deeply meaningful. Meeting bright students, teachers, and officials made the experience unforgettable.”
President Nwosu was joined by SUNY Provost Melur Ramasubramanian, SUNY Polytechnic Institute President Wole Soboyejo, and SUNY Fredonia President Stephen H. Kolison Jr. Together, they formalized new university agreements, engaged with government ministries, and connected with students and alumni.
In Nigeria, the delegation signed Oswego’s first institutional agreement at the University of Ibadan and visited Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Lagos. In Lagos, SUNY showcased its programs to local high schools with support from alumna Jane Nwagu of FBN Insurance Brokers.
In Kenya, they held discussions with Vice Chancellors of 35 public universities, met with officials at the Ministry of Education and Foreign Affairs, and visited the National Museums of Kenya. A U.S. Embassy reception drew nearly 100 stakeholders to explore student visa and academic pathways.
In Rwanda, the group engaged the University of Rwanda, Rwanda Polytechnic, and three cabinet ministers, focusing on innovation, workforce development, and student mobility.
